Upping the Ante – The Art and Science of Form Designing, Part 1

By: Don Bakke

Mark Twain is credited for the statement “clothes make the man.” Today he might have easily said “the user interface makes the application.” The truth of this statement should encourage all OpenInsight developers to devote much of their attention toward learning the Form Designer and understanding how to produce a professional and intuitive user interface. This presentation will demonstrate best practices for using the Form Designer including several undocumented features that will simplify common tasks. Forms from real applications will be analyzed and examined for their adherence toward good design principles.

In this age of rapidly evolving technologically, the expectations for features, performance, and beauty in the user interface are exceedingly high. Fortunately the openness of OpenInsight provides developers with the means of tapping into the best that technology has to offer. This presentation will focus on OpenInsight’s support for ActiveX and how it can bring new levels of richness and functionality into an application. There will be a special emphasis on programming ActiveX controls in very creative ways using OpenInsight’s pre-installed ActiveX controls as well as commercial products such as SRP’s own extensive catalog. Even attendees familiar with using ActiveX controls will learn new techniques and capabilities.

Going All In – Using a Framework to Develop a Winning Application

By: Don Bakke

One of the enduring strengths of OpenInsight is its ability to empower developers and free them from constraints. However, with this power and flexibility comes the challenge of preventing complex and evolving applications from getting too disorganized. Implementing a development framework solves many of these problems while equipping developers with tools that increase productivity. This presentation will showcase how SRP’s own framework product uses promoted events, MFS technology, management tools, and development standards to produce professional, robust, scalable, and flexible applications for small to enterprise sized businesses. Attendees will be given tips and techniques on how they can implement some of all of these concepts in their own environment.
